Bernd Koller was born in 1971 in Fusch an der Großglocknerstraße. He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. The artist lives and works in Vienna and Fusch.
Arnulf Rainer's pupil is inspired by the dialogue between nature and man. His works, which are often washed and executed with sparing brushstrokes, revolve around this theme. Using watercolours, black chalk or pencil, Koller develops fragile compositions with both romantic and nature-mystical traits in his works, which on closer inspection, however, prove to be brittle and fragile. He combines figurative elements with landscape impressions in an associative way.
In 2006 Bernd Koller was awarded the Georg Eisler Prize for Painting.
