Franziska Hünig was born in Dresden in 1970, she lives and works in Berlin. She studied from 1996 – 2001 Fine Arts at the Universität der Künste in Berlin. Since 2017 she has a lectureship (painting) at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences.
In her works created in 2008 and 2009, the painting process is characterized by a gestural application of color that interacts with the inherent dynamics of the color material.
The supports are canvases which lie on the floor during the painting process and which she works on from all sides with long brushes, rollers and squeegees. She let the paint flow, wash it out partially after drying it for a short time, pour paint onto the picture carrier again and distribute it with large brushes. In the next layers, she opposed the organic structures she had created with a loose geometry that can consist of brushstrokes or collage-like picture elements. In several layers there is an alternation between targeted settlements and allowing and observing material-immanent processes. The colour application varies from very thin colour to dense colour settlements; glossy, lacquer-like surfaces contrast matte.
The often large formats of her works correspond to the radius of action of her body. When painting on the floor, the movement and rhythm of the body are transferred to the canvas. On the large formats, the colour has the space to unfold a physical effect. The viewer perceives both the colour and its materiality as well as the rhythm of the compositional elements in relation to his own body.
The painting process is always a reflection on painting, in which she uses a kind of "planned coincidence".
